Chapter Eighteen
I woke up at six oâclock, brushed my teeth, had a quick shower, poured myself a cup of coffee, and had a piece of buttered toast before I hurried out the front door and got into my car. Iâd been in such a rush that I hadnât even checked my phone and had kept it silent the night before because I wanted to make sure I got a good nightâs sleep without any disturbances.
After parking my car and scurrying through the parking lot towards the front doors of my office, I glanced down at my phone to check the time. That was when I saw I had numerous missed calls from Jane.
Stopping, I stood there and stared at my phone. What had happened? Jane never called me in the middle of the night. Sometimes sheâd send me a funny video or something cute, but I couldnât remember her ever calling me at three in the morning. She had called five times as I slept.
I stood there as my heart began to thump rapidly. What was wrong? Something must have happened. I held my phone to my ear as I called her. The phone rang for a while and I began to worry she wouldnât pick up, but then she finally answered.
âHey, Tina,â she sounded like she hadnât slept. Her words were soft and drawn out.
âWhat happened? I missed a lot of calls from you.â
âToddâs in the hospital. He got beat up really bad last night.â
âWhat?â
âTina, somebody broke into his house while he was sleeping. He said he woke up and said they were standing at the foot of the bed staring at him in the dark. Before he could react, they dragged him from the bed and started beating him.â
âOh my God. Who did this? Was it a robbery?â
âNo, they didnât take anything.â
âIs he okay?â
âHeâs going to be okay, but itâs pretty scary. You should come see him when you get a chance.â
âIâm on my way now. Iâll have to text my boss that Iâll be running late today. Jane, who did this?â
She said nothing. I repeated the question. Finally she said shakily, âTodd and the cops say it was Jeremy⦠Heâs in custody now, Tina, from what I hear. My coworker Molly was grabbing coffee downtown this morning and said she saw him being hauled into the station by two officers. He was handcuffed. I donât know if theyâre going to hold him, but Iâd guess theyâre questioning him.â
âWhat? No. I was with him last night until I went home. He was in a good mood.â
âIâm just telling you what I heard. Iâve barely talked to Todd. Heâs been in and out of consciousness.â
My head began to spin. I couldnât believe what she was telling me. I hung up suddenly and texted my boss to tell him that I was going to be late, and then I got back into my car and drove to the hospital with my mind racing. Sweat dripped down my forehead, stinging my eyes.
