Chapter Eighteen

I woke up at six o’clock, brushed my teeth, had a quick shower, poured myself a cup of coffee, and had a piece of buttered toast before I hurried out the front door and got into my car. I’d been in such a rush that I hadn’t even checked my phone and had kept it silent the night before because I wanted to make sure I got a good night’s sleep without any disturbances.

After parking my car and scurrying through the parking lot towards the front doors of my office, I glanced down at my phone to check the time. That was when I saw I had numerous missed calls from Jane.

Stopping, I stood there and stared at my phone. What had happened? Jane never called me in the middle of the night. Sometimes she’d send me a funny video or something cute, but I couldn’t remember her ever calling me at three in the morning. She had called five times as I slept.

I stood there as my heart began to thump rapidly. What was wrong? Something must have happened. I held my phone to my ear as I called her. The phone rang for a while and I began to worry she wouldn’t pick up, but then she finally answered.

“Hey, Tina,” she sounded like she hadn’t slept. Her words were soft and drawn out.

“What happened? I missed a lot of calls from you.”

“Todd’s in the hospital. He got beat up really bad last night.”

“What?”

“Tina, somebody broke into his house while he was sleeping. He said he woke up and said they were standing at the foot of the bed staring at him in the dark. Before he could react, they dragged him from the bed and started beating him.”

“Oh my God. Who did this? Was it a robbery?”

“No, they didn’t take anything.”

“Is he okay?”

“He’s going to be okay, but it’s pretty scary. You should come see him when you get a chance.”

“I’m on my way now. I’ll have to text my boss that I’ll be running late today. Jane, who did this?”

She said nothing. I repeated the question. Finally she said shakily, “Todd and the cops say it was Jeremy… He’s in custody now, Tina, from what I hear. My coworker Molly was grabbing coffee downtown this morning and said she saw him being hauled into the station by two officers. He was handcuffed. I don’t know if they’re going to hold him, but I’d guess they’re questioning him.”

“What? No. I was with him last night until I went home. He was in a good mood.”

“I’m just telling you what I heard. I’ve barely talked to Todd. He’s been in and out of consciousness.”

My head began to spin. I couldn’t believe what she was telling me. I hung up suddenly and texted my boss to tell him that I was going to be late, and then I got back into my car and drove to the hospital with my mind racing. Sweat dripped down my forehead, stinging my eyes.
